One thing we all know is that most people do judge a book by its cover. Be that as it may we all have different outlooks on clothing and reasons for wearing what we do wear. For some reason I never really cared if I was wearing “dress clothes” or casual clothes. As a kid I would fuck them up just the same. When I was younger I was made to wear dress clothes frequently.
During High school and college years I remember having Timbs in all available colors. Wallabee Clarks dyed in unique colors to match my fitted hats in whatever colors I happened to be into that month. That was fun but it got old. As did living in the hood. Early on in my professional career I was lucky enough to have a manager that even though it wasn’t demanded, required her group to wear button up shirts and ties. At the time I didn’t interface with clients or customers so I didn’t get it. Later on it was apparent that it did matter. We were all a reflection of her as members of her team. If we looked neat and together that perception indicated to other departments (more importantly executive staff) that we had it together even though that really was not always the case.
Nowadays I make it a point to look as clean as possible. Maybe I have been watching too much Mad Men, (LOVE THAT SERIES… the writing is great) I’ll admit, I have but quite honestly some one once told me to dress for the position you want not the one you have. Some of the best advice I have ever received. And yes it works. If I didn’t dress well there is no way I would be “seen” as professional enough to hang when colleagues are much older. I am at least 10 years younger than everyone else on my level where I work so for me what some may consider “dressing up” is a must. As a bonus women love it.
Lately I have been getting pretty addicted to checking GILT. They feature some great deals on suits though you have to be fast and know your sizes. Park & Bond is also a nice site for men of style.
Throw on a suit, get it tapered up.
