I’ve been wanting to play this game for so long. I hope it’s worth the wait. The PC release was received very well, among critics and consumers alike.

Its hard not to draw comparisons to games like Gran Theft Auto so lets just get that out of the way. Both games are open world and set in modern time though Saints Row The Third is much more over the top and fantastical than games in the Grand Theft Auto series. The increased language, violence and sexual innuendos make for a much more over the top experience. For example in Saints Row The Third running over pedestrians is par for the course. Items such as the “Penetrator” which is a large purple dildo bat is a clear indication that the game doesn’t take itself seriously at all. Much like Grand Theft Auto IV you access missions via your characters cellphone. Saints Row The Third is all about over the top fun over story, and over seriousness.

The character and vehicle controls are good and much more satisfying than those in Gran Theft Auto or any open world Rockstar games for that matter. The shooting mechanics are more akin to game like Just Cause 2 for example and gets the job done with out being frustrating.

There is the standard variety of weapons you would expect. Handguns, shotguns, rocket launchers, machine guns, light machine guns and laser rifles, and grenades are all there for you to use to cause havoc. The all perform pretty much as they should. There is a wide variety of cars and trucks and also jets, planes, helicopter and tanks that you can commandeer.

When in the vehicles there are a variety “radio stations” in different genres that play nicely selected licensed music tracks. The licensed music also pops in during main story missions at key times. For example in one instance in the main story you jump out a plane and Kanye West’s “Power” starts to play. The music is well selected and placed.

The games main story is over the top and overall it provides enough variety to keep you interested. I think this is an important point to make because open world games have a habit of becoming repetitive. During the first few hours of the game you are introduced to the side mission types and after that you can opt to do them or skip them entirely and just get through the main storyline which is about 12 hours.

Saints Row The Third is by far the least repetitive open world game I have played in a very long time.

The game is so big that I could go into the minutia on the game but if you were looking forward to an open world urban game and were disappointed in Grand Theft Auto IV or are just looking for an open world game to scratch that itch then this game is very likely to be right up your alley.

The verdict is that Saints Row The Third is a great urban open world action game with tons of content. It’s worth it even at full price so give it a go.
