If I had to sum up whats great about Gears of War 3 it would have to be the incorporation of the best elements of other games into its core formula. As soon as you boot the game up you notice the clean user interface and menu system that has a halo or call of duty esque feel. You immediately notice how easy it is ping your friends and get a party going for co-op campeign or competitive multiplayer games.After starting a game you notice that loading between levels is seamless just like in the latest Uncharted games. In fact its clear that the team at Epic Games were clear about incorporating great elements from the best games and Gears of War 3 is all the better for it.
BOOM! BOOM! POW!
The shooting, aiming and cover mechanics are tight and just what you would expect from a Gears game. Headshots accurately register as headshots and overall the shooting in the game is spot on. The active reload system is still in effect and rightly so. There is a nice variety of weapons that include classic as well as new versions of classic weapons such as the lancer. It’s a nice way to please die hard fans and still incorporate new elements. The bottom line is as a third person shooter Gears 3 is a top of the line game.
HAM & CHEEZE
As an action adventure game Gears of War three does entertain all the way through. The game was never a chore and I got all the way through it never once wanting to throw a controller. It’s not super deep and does not have a particularly compelling narrative but its fun and at times silly as hell. The jokes are hammy and at times some of the characters even border on the verge of being negatively stereotypical. Looking at you Cole! Its clear that the game doesnt take itself too seriously so its fine and also you have to applaud the racially diverse cast which is all too rare in video games.
LAMBDA LAMBENT
The graphics in this game are top notch without a doubt. I was shocked at how good the game actually looks. Detailed and crisp textures, brilliant lighting effects, vivid colors and smooth non jagged edged characters and environmental objects. Gears of War 3 might just be the best looking game on the Xbox 360 at this time. The spectacular effects are especially noticiable when fighing the Lambent. Specifically when the Lambent explode its evident that the Unreal Engine that powers the game has been improved and can compete with other game engines that power the best games on the market. The set pieces and stages are detailed and varied. The visuals do not disapoint.
REVIVE ME!
The main story/campeign mode comes in two main flavors. You can play in regular or arcade variations. The arcade variation of the main story mode tallies up the points at the end of each stage and shows you who is putting in the most work among your local or online buddes. Arcade mode adds replayability. The regular mode doesnt bother you with score tallies and allows you to experience the story with less of a focus on points. Horde mode which pretty much was made popular from Gears 2 and is now in so many other games has of course returned in more flavors and considering the deathmatch and other competitive online multiplayer modes inlcuded Gears of War 3 offers so much in terms of multiplayer. Needless to say there are tens to hundreds of hours of play here that makes the game very worth it even at full price.
VERDICT
Gears of War 3 looks great, plays great, and every last bit of it can be played with buddies at home or online which is rare. Tons of modes, no loading issues, and good netcode makes this a top notch game that any fan of third person shooter games should play.
