The Tiger, Lion, Garuda and Dragon

brooklyn August 2, 2011 0

The tiger, lion, garuda and dragon are symbols of ancient Tibet. Each represents specific virtues or dignities and are meant to be physical representations or visualization of core principles that of which we should be mindful as we walk through life. You may have seen these figures quite a bit in Asian art, architecture or movie titles like Bruce Lee’s Enter the Dragon for example and not known the significance. If you look at Enter the Dragon as an example Bruce lee’s character defeats his enemy with the wisdom of the dragon. His opponent had the skills but not wisdom. Here we will take a look at the meaning of these symbols and why they are pervasive in eastern cultures. But first here are some fundamental principles to lay the groundwork for understanding the four great dignities.

Consider that if you do something virtuous then virtue is a result. If you do something non virtuous then non virtue is a result.

If you try to solve an issue with anger or aggression your result will be unsatisfactory. Resolving issues with anger or jealousy will only perpetuate those things. These are basic notions of karma. Its like gravity and it occurs whether or not you are paying attention.

To obtain satisfaction and happiness it is said that the most helpful approach is living clean. For example being honest, open and upfront. This can provide a kind of cleanness or purity that provides a light energetic quality as opposed to being weighed down by remorse or regret from transgressions or things we should not have said or done or even should have said. Living clean provides a certain positive energy or strength that can carry us forward through life with confidence, joy and contentment.

I am learning to understand rather than immediately judge or to be judged. I cannot blindly follow the crowd and accept their approach. I will not allow myself to indulge in the usual manipulating game of role creation. Fortunately for me, my self-knowledge has transcended that and I have come to understand that life is best to be lived and not to be conceptualized. I am happy because I am growing daily and I am honestly not knowing where the limit lies. To be certain, every day there can be a revelation or a new discovery. I treasure the memory of the past misfortunes. It has added more to my bank of fortitude.”- Bruce Lee

Remember that we sit in our own mind. Think about contemplation like a mineral bath. If you want to sit in resentment then that’s what will soak in. If you sit in grudges and anger then you will be weighed down and unhappy. If we sit in kindness, forgiveness, and love there will be more light and joy in your life.

These are important concepts in what some call the journey of the warrior. Here are the related symbols and their meanings:

Tiger – Unconditional confidence, disciplined awareness, kindness and modesty. It is relaxed yet energized. Tigers lie patient waiting for the right moment to act. Disciplined awareness. It is confident in not having to act until the right time. An example of this is saving up and paying off your bills before you buy a new car as opposed to buying one when its more of a stretch to afford it or just because a friend or neighbor just bought one. Tigers move with purpose and at the opportune time. How do you walk through life?

Snow Lion – Depicted high on peaks. High on the mountain. Cleanness and high mindedness brings a quality of joy. Radience that you get from living clean. You don’t have to worry about covering any lies you told, or anything covered up coming to light. You can focus that energy on better things. High mindedness creates situational ease through life. Joy comes from giving and taking the high road. Dignity, joy, and uplifting others. Cleanness in life.

Garuda – Boundlessness, flight. Has a mind bigger than fears and pettiness. Limitless love and kindness. Moving forward and fearless. Soars beyond without holding back. It symbolizes freedom from hopes and fears.

Dragon – Complete wisdom and understanding. Deals with the mind. Vision and real depth. Non substantiation. Knowing the difference between what is and what things appear to be on the surface. true confidence. Knowing reality. For example you can say to yourself “I am not mad at this person because they are in denial and don’t see it… yet I do I see it for what it is. Thus I am not mad at them or this situation.” Without the depth of the dragon you may get angry or jealous. Without the wisdom of the dragon you are seeing things on on the surface as they appear and not the cause or underlying substance behind things. The dragon awakens us from our own delusion through compassion.

Knowledge of these themes and symbols will not automatically transform you into a super wise and virtuous person (TRUST ME) but though consideration and practice these concepts can help greatly in everyday life towards the right path.

Ever since I was a child I had this instinctive urge for expansion and growth. To me the function of and duty of a quality human being is the sincere and honest development of one’s potential.”
