What a Hacked PS3 Should Do

ps3-hacked

Now that the PS3 is hacked and wide open for homebrew I started to think about what will happen. We all know piracy is inevitable. Some of you reading this right now are scheming on taking advantage and not buying games. It comes with the territory I guess. The fact of the matter is that now that the system is open much good and much evil will undoubtedly spring forth.

With all this in mind I started to think about what exactly I would want a hacked PS3 to do that it can not do now or does not do well in un-hax0red form. Here’s what I came up with…

Proper Instant in Game Screenshots

There is currently a PSP screenshot homebrew app that I use for reviews on this website that does this perfectly. You press the select button and the + volume button at the same time and voila. Instant screenshot gets saved to the system memory card. Simple and elegant. Now the clunky way the PS3 handles it is horrible. Many games ask you to press the laggy home button, then you must trudge to the ‘photos’ menu and select the ‘screenshot’ option. As of the latest update less than a few weeks ago MAG requires this. Other games force you to pause the game to use their photo mode and very few game have functionality that allows for screenshots to be taken while in-game.

Developers sucked at getting this right far too long and I have hopes that a talented homebrew developer takes this on and creates a simple screenshot homebrew app for PS3. Perhaps we click in both sticks or we hold L2 and the select button. Even better if we can set it ourselves. Whatever it may be we have all missed far too many great photo moments in games because the games require a pause to take a photo.

HDCP Removal

One of the things Microsoft got right from the start was not including HDCP in its HDMI signal. HDCP is copy protection. It prevents capturing video game footage over an HDMI cable. So basically much of the HD footage out there would look better if we did not have to capture it via analog component and could capture a pure digital signal. It’s annoying and people who are savvy enough to capture footage can get around HDCP anyway. It’s not really protecting anything. Hopefully a homebrew app is created that removed HDCP from PS3 HDMI signals.

Party Chat

xmb-chatCall me Captain Obvious! But yes, this was an obvious one. It’s times like this when many of the things the fans cried out about can actually be addressed. If cross game chat is actually possible on the system then hopefully it will be done via homebrew app. Addressing things like this that Sony has neglected will go a long way for winning new fans of the homebrew scene.

Capture

This one is probably pie in the sky but hey the cell (processor) is supposed to be the shiznit. A game capture feature like the one in Just Cause 2 that you can control from the in game XMB would be huge. Bonus points if they can also integrate the upload straight to YouTube from the XMB. Not only that but I would also adore DVR functionality integrated into the PS3. Think of how easy it would be to make funny gifs of video game clips!

Custom Soundtracks

psn-custom-soundtracks

The PlayStation 3 now has this functionality already built into the firmware. We know this, though we also know there is a ton of older games that were never updated with custom soundtrack functionality. Also its like the wild wild west with no standard way across the platform. Some games have it in the actual game options menu, some require you to use the XMB and of course most games don’t have the custom music option at all. I would like to see a custom soundtrack app that works for every game. Perhaps even making it so that so that the official XMB custom soundtrack feature works for EVERY game. No more “content does not support custom music at this time” or whatever that annoying message really happens to say. You know the message. Lets get rid of it! Also the ability to stream custom soundtrack music from the media server like you can on the Xbox 360 would be great as well.

No Disc After Install

This one is most likely a given considering that piracy will be alive and well no matter how you slice this. The other side of it is that there are many people such as myself who do have a shelf or two of legitimately purchased games that I would rather not have to load manually. The PlayStation 3 does provide owners the ability to install their own hard drives. I have a 500GB drive in my PS3 and would like to install at least 6 games that I play frequently. My Red Dead Redemption disc actually cracked in the center ring rendering it useless because of taking it in and out of the case so much. Why scratch a disc when we can install it once and run it that way? A no disc required after install option would be nice.

What do you want?

Those are a few that I thought of as this ps3 hack news hit. What homebrew functionality would you like to see?

If they managed to make a Cross Game Chat app..then it would prove me wrong about my bullsh*.
And what is my bullsh*? is that PS3 cannot do multitasking! If it can we would have seen Cross Game Chat, Custom Soundtrack and Party System ages ago!

The thing about hackers is that hacking a system is not illegal however making it run pirated games is illegal. If hackers can stop piracy with hacking then I’m sure companies such as Sony will not be hot headed and take things to court like they recently did.
If you have 500gb use it for something else then! use it for movies and other bullsh*, why do you want them for games?

anyway…from the start XBMC is the first thing to think about!

also what is the point in OWNING the boxart and game if you want to play the game directly on hdd??? it doesn’t make sense.

The whole purpose of you collecting this games and stocking them on shelves to look good and show off to visitors, is to pick a game, open it and pop the disc in. If you are playing your games straight from HDD, then it eliminates the purpose of having box art+disc!

In the end..it makes it piracy! And don’t give me bullsh* about, it’s for backup copy.
If it’s for backup copy then you still need to put the disc in to validate the code to play the game from hdd. Once the game is running, you can then remove the disc and continue playing straight from hdd.

What Sony couldn’t deliver to us…

    PlayStation 2 emulator
    Wii emulator
    Xbox emulator
    fully supported linux
    .mkv video support
    ntfs file storage device support
custom dynamic themes through video file
    better looking XMB with options
    cross game voice chat support

Lack of Cross Game Chat is a LEGAL issue not a technical one. If the machine could not multitask it would be garbage.

Could the previous comment be any more retarded? The guy just wants to play games without getting up, getting a disk, taking out the old disk, putting in the new disk, putting the old disk away. Is that so freaking hard to understand? Who said anything about box art or other bs? Guess what, he can install games on the hard drive AND display games on a shelf. Jeez, why are gamers such tards these days?

A DVR would be one of the sweetest homebrew apps I can think of. Second, a nice cheat for GT5 that unlocks ALL cars, FULL damage, etc. I have better things to do than race grossly overpowered cars just to earn money just to unlock cars, or even worse, let the retard b-spec driver do it. Games that force you to grind really piss me off… I paid for the game, let me play ALL of it damit. Third, a homebrew app for my phat to install my PS2 games to the hard drive. (f-you sony for not including this already) I know there’s one out there but it’s a bitch to configure and you need some 3rd party app just to install, or something. A liitle app to delete trophies when you don’t want them anymore – there’s tons of old trophy crap from demos I tried years ago. How about a simple app that shows just the ps3 demos from the sony store whithout all the psp, move, & playstation plus bs? How about that sony, don’t shove that crap down our throats, if we want it, we’ll find it thank you very much. While we’re at it, a version of the PS store where you don’t have to click ‘back’ 50 times for every freakin thing you do – you click download, it should automatically start background downloading and take you back to the menu. Duh!! Oh, and don’t download it twice if I’m already downloading it – jeez louise sony. Finally, put back otheros on the xmb!

Ok, done ranting now. Can’t wait for all the custom firmware. NOW the ps3 does everything.

Xino, you talk a lot of **** man!

First of all if PS3 cannot multitask then why can I listen to music and browse the net at the same time? Why can I use Folding@Home and listen to music at the same time? How can the PS3 deliver two streams of audio at the same time (to two seperate devices and with two different audio decodes… such as Surround and Tru-Surround at the same time), which to my belief is something I haven’t yet seen on a PC!!!!!

Also, people don’t buy game to make the shelf look good. People buy games to play games. Although I agree with you that this is designed more for piracy than homebrew… the other stuff you wrote is rediculous.

I’d pretty much like all the above &…

    - The ability to charge my controllers while the Playstation 3 is in standby mode.
    - Shuffle added to both the Photo & Video options
    - Video Playlists
    - More Visualizations
    - Cross Game Voice Chat
    - Radio Application that can be used to stream music in game
    - A Free Music Video App like Vid Zone in the Europe
    - Ohh and for them to fix Remote Play so that it works with all Routers & Gateways

I’m sure there’s others but that’s all I can think of for right now. The sad thing is that when hackers to get into the Playstation 3 they show that Sony has been sitting on it’s hands when it comes to these features we want, instead of bringing them out. It almost makes me want to hack my system strictly for the awesome features that will surely come within months of it been completely hacked instead of the years & years it takes Sony to do it in. :-(

As a UK user with a US launch phatty I’d like to see an app which removes region locking for all media types, so I can finally play all my PS2 games and start buying Blu-Rays.

Simple: Ability to drop games onto an NFS/SMB/AFP share, and run them from there!

  10. xino January 4, 2011 at 11:57 am -

mother farker if you are gonna reply to me, at least put your name if you have any honour.
Any sucker who comes barking at me without putting a name down is just a useless inferior asshole I shouldn’t waste me time with. But with you..I’ll allow you for now.

Yes you can do those only TWO things on PS3 because they do not eat up the PS3 OS memory!

Sony’s goal is to always find a way to run win their competitors.
Why do you think PS3 got Netflix, Hulu, Lovefilem, TV broadcasting?
because Xbox (XBAWKS) 360 has SKY, Netflix.

If Xbox 360 can have cross game chat, custom soundtrack and party system. WHY CAN’T SONY THINK OF A WAY TO OUT DO THEM?
Why must it be developers to make a partially working party system for a multiplatform ps3 title just because the PS3 CANNOT MULTITASK!

Everyone has been begging Sony to fix the Browser freezing issue and other regards. Sony recently made changes- by just making it HD compatible. That’s because using the browser eats up the OS memory and causes it to fix!

If Sony wants to prove me wrong about all these ps3 can’t multitask bullsh* then I guess they should roll out what the fans are requesting in order to beat their rivals!

  11. Comment January 4, 2011 at 12:37 pm -

I’d like to install Linux on my system, Hopefully the hackers’ll augment their homebrew with the “Install Other OS” feature.

well me? I want copy games to invade the market yea man guhaha thankyoudj!

  13. uberfry January 4, 2011 at 12:57 pm -

Yeah xino, sony doesn’t give 2 shits about your half assed opinion, let alone proving you wrong. Now go back to mommy’s basement like a good little troll.

  14. Dude January 4, 2011 at 1:36 pm -

Support for Xbox 360 controllers :D
    And XBMC of course.

Xbox is the best! PS3 slaves, time to jump in.

KINECT IS THE FUTURE OF GAMING, BIATCHES.

  16. Xno January 4, 2011 at 4:31 pm -

Maybe.. accept for the millions of gamers that like to sit and play…

  17. Justin Dupre January 5, 2011 at 9:52 am -

Xbox 360 is much better than PS3 especially with the online community. The feature def all of the above and the ability to charge my controllers while the Playstation 3 is in standby mode is also pretty good. I want to see sony lower the price for all games lol

  18. Johnny--Mac January 8, 2011 at 1:06 pm -

This isnt a console war lobby ok guys… go on YT and type in ps3 vs xbox, You will get 5432 vids of trolls and you can bit ch ALL day. As for this hack is concerned I only can hope it WILL NOT lead to big game titles such as COD, BFBC and RB3 being hacked to the point were online play is damaged (aimbot, bots like in gh3). Its not a queston of Hotshot (the person responsible for using the algorithm to get sony’s universal sig code), but a question of 14 year olds copy pasting shit 40 year olds made because of this hotshot dude… I really hope PSN wont become STEAM -_- As for cross game chat… its a legal issue, it had copywrite on it since who knows when and microsoft had big lawsuit problems when they presented there own cross game chat. NO they still have it but because gates is so wealthy / microsoft is such a huge company he was able to somehow bend strings and get it (lots of money.. hes an idiot/ the managers of xbawks) As for PS3… ya they dont want to fork out millions of dollars JUST to get cross game when they JUST went into profit 6 months ago. ALRIGHT now please move on.

  19. Lethalwolf January 11, 2011 at 3:40 am -

I must agree with Boris – comment 5. getting rid of trophies you don’t want anymore would be helpful plus being able to play my ps2 games as well. wolf26pack, i love your idea about letting my controller charge on stand by. installing the game on the HDD would hopefully improve the response time – aka reduce lag between pressing the controller and reaction.
I want a DVR on it, playtv is nice, but would be better to be able to skip commercials and transfer file out without the FAT32 resctictions.
